Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor - The Creative Professions of Ancient Egypt

5 weekly sessions on campus, on Tuesdays at 11am-1pm, starting from Tuesday 4 November.

Overview

Using material culture and texts, this course will examine the lives of the workforce of ancient Egypt. We will be focussing on the creative occupations of musicians and dancers, hairdressers and manicurists, artists, and the female roles of nurse, tutor and midwife. This course will develop participants' knowledge of the skills, training, working conditions and career prospects of the ancient Egyptians. We will consider who held these roles and how they acquired these positions. A visit to the Garstang Museum is included where students will be able to handle objects from ancient Egypt related to the professions. No prior knowledge is required just an inquisitive mind.
