Piano Playing through a Study of the Life of Beethoven

5 weekly online sessions on Mondays at 10am-12pm, starting from Monday 29 September.

Overview

This unique course will introduce you to the works of Beethoven through analysis and interrogation of some of his most popular piano and orchestral works. Looking at such works as Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata and Beethoven's symphonies, we'll discover the history, context, structure, chords, melody, notation, interpretation and performance techniques that are also common in many other works of the Romantic era. The course includes a practical dimension, where you'll have the optional opportunity to experience playing simple sections from relevant pieces on the piano (or keyboard) in order to really comprehend the musical genius of the artist.

Whether you want piano or keyboard skills, music theory or music reading skills, or would like to listen to classical music with a deeper knowledge and understanding, this course is for you. No prior knowledge of music is required. Access to a keyboard or piano at home is advantageous and will enhance learning, but is not essential.
