Masterpieces: An Introduction to J.M.W. Turner

Two weekly meetings on campus, on Thursday 13 and Thursday 20 November, 2-4pm.

Overview

Join us for an exploration of the celebrated and influential British artist J.M.W. Turner. This course is designed to coincide with Turner 250, a year-long festival of exhibitions and events celebrating 250 years since the birth of Turner.

This course explores the career of one of Britain’s greatest artists, J.M.W. Turner. It provides you with a grounding in the different phases in Turner's artistic output, examining the influences (both historical and contemporary) which shaped his work and considering his legacy and impact on later artists. You'll gain a greater understanding of both Turner and the 19th century art scene in which he worked.

Our course is designed for anyone with an interest in the history of art. It's especially suitable if you are seeking to further your knowledge of Turner and the cultural context in which he created his masterpieces. No prior knowledge is needed, just a passion for exploring and discussing art.
