Frequently Asked Questions

Coming to University is a big decision and it’s important that you make the choice that’s right for you. Below are answers to questions we often get asked by prospective students.

I’ve missed the Open Days or Applicant Discovery Days but I’d still like to hear more about Chemistry and Liverpool. What should I do?

Contact one of our Admissions Tutors, Dr. Gina Washbourn and Dr. Joe Forth, who will be happy to help.

Can I switch courses once I’ve started?

We understand that deciding what you want to do for your degree is a difficult decision to make. We offer lots of flexibility in our programmes to help support you in making and refining that decision as you progress through a chemistry degree with us.

Between BSc and MChem

In general, so long as it’s in the first two years of your degree, yes! If you’re switching from the MChem to the BSc, so long as your average grades are above 60%, you can switch any time during the first two years of your degree. You can switch from the BSc to the MChem no matter what your grades are.

To a Medicinal Chemistry course

BSc Medicinal Chemistry and MChem Medicinal Chemistry with Pharmacology courses are a little less flexible due to the modules you take in 1st year. These allow for the specialisation in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology. If you want to take these degrees, you need to have decided within a few weeks after starting your degree. If you are potentially interested in these courses, our advice is to start your degree on these programmes, and if you decide you wish to change you can swap to one of our straight chemistry programmes anytime during the first two years.

“I chose to study Medicinal Chemistry because it perfectly combines my favourite aspects of both chemistry and biology. I was fascinated by the chemistry behind drug discovery”

Joe Armah – BSc Medicinal Chemistry

Industry Placement Courses

If you wish to do a course with an industry placement, you need to choose to swap to this course by the start of second year. For industry placement, you will need to write a CV, cover letter, complete application forms and prepare for interviews. This a great opportunity to showcase your growing employability skills as you study with us, and we provide lots of support in the department and through our careers studio, to support your success.

What are my options for study abroad?

We offer a huge range of options for international study. As well as the full range of options for a year or semester abroad on our Global Opportunities page, we also offer the option to undertake a summer internship in Chemistry at one of our partner Universities in a range of exciting destinations.

Do you offer internships over summer?

Yes! These can be funded from a range of sources, whether it’s getting paid to help develop new teaching material for university, to immersing yourself in the cutting-edge research of one of the academic groups from our research clusters.

Does Maths count as a science A-level?

Yes! If you are taking A-level Maths alongside A-level Chemistry, this counts as studying 2 sciences at A-level.

Do I need to take A-level Maths to study a chemistry degree?

You don’t need to have studied an A-level in Maths to do a chemistry degree with us, however doing one is helpful. Chemistry does have Maths throughout

with strong links to spectroscopy, physical chemistry and other areas. You will study some fundamental maths for Chemistry throughout year 1 and year 2.

Anie Thomas

“As someone who did not do A-Level Maths, the level of maths you would have to learn in the degree is not complicated at all. With some practice, understanding and the additional support provided, you will be able to wizz through!”

Anie Thomas – BSc Chemistry Student

For students who would like some additional maths supports we have lots of additional support resources and our Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme, in which we have weekly workshops run by our undergraduates. This supportive environment complements our curriculum in all areas, but has proved to be particularly valuable for students who have not done A-level Maths.
