Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool. We hope you will enjoy your time studying with us here.
BSc or MChem?
You can opt for a range of 3-year BSc courses or 4-year MChem programmes, starting off at the fundamentals of Chemistry in years 1 and 2, and moving into more advanced, research-connected material in years 3 and 4. We offer a range of degrees, including study with a year abroad or in industry, specialising in Medicinal Chemistry, or combining that with Pharmacology.
Thanks to our innovative distance learning methods you can even fit a year in industry into the MChem course and still complete in 4 years.
Teaching and Learning Support
We want you to excel and offer great personal and academic support, from free online access to textbooks and personal protective equipment to personal tutors, buddies, Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) and e-learning.
“The people and the community have been my favourite part of my degree so far. Everyone is not just friendly, but supportive and uplifting; it's not just your peers or seniors you can talk to, but the lovely lecturers who are all incredible characters - embodying the Faculty wide culture of growth, by constantly listening and acting on feedback.”
Jerry Kakkanattu – MChem Medicinal Chemistry with Pharmacology
Facilities
We have cutting-edge teaching facilities. During their first three years of study, student will spend their lab time in award winning Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL). This space comprises of 8 ‘lab spaces’ including two dedicated Chemistry teaching laboratories, an Environmental Sciences Lab, 3 physics labs, a computer suite and a flexible teaching space. These modern labs have been equipped with state-of-the art equipment, including an 300 MHz NMR and IR Microscope.
The CTL also has lots of flexible seating paces where we often find chemistry students studying and socialising together.
“My favourite part of my chemistry education has been engaging with research-grade chemicals and equipment. The Central Teaching Laboratories were the UK’s first university shared teaching laboratory space, which has truly supported my digital chemistry course. During the same lab session, I can go upstairs to prepare a sample in a fume hood, then go downstairs to program an industry-grade robot to experiment with the sample.”
Michael Gillin – BSc Chemistry and MSc Digital Chemistry student
Frontier science
Students often tell us how impressed they were at discovering our facilities, people, and campus, not to mention the brilliant city of Liverpool.
Here you will be steeped in cutting-edge science, using advanced equipment in our £28 million teaching labs. As you progress through the course, you will take on a more independent role and work closely with our research groups.
Research-connected teaching is at the forefront of our programmes and you will have the opportunity to interact with researchers from across our research clusters, which include Chemistry of World Health, Chemical Models, Energy and Interfaces, Materials Chemistry, and Organic Synthesis and Catalysis.
