Disrupted Education

At Liverpool, we recognise that some learners can face additional barriers, or need different levels of support when progressing to higher education. Our Disrupted Education project works with specific targeted groups to provide this support

These groups include care experienced young people, estranged students, young carers, children of military families, asylum seekers and refugees, young people from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller backgrounds and young people who have faced medical issues during their time at school or college.

The Disrupted Education programme provides extensive support for young people in these categories who have the potential to progress to university, including 

  • Bespoke information, advice and guidance from dedicated outreach staff to support application and transition to university 
  • Support with transport to the University's Open Days and Applicant Discovery Days 
  • Financial support (eligibility criteria applies) 
  • 365-day accommodation during your studies at Liverpool
  • A place on the Liverpool Plus programme 
  • Priority for a job role as a Liverpool Advocate.

If you are an student considering the University of Liverpool for September 2027 entry, you can refer yourself to the Disrupted Education programme by completing the relevant Disrupted Studies form: 

  • If you are applying for Medicine, please complete this form. You'll also need to complete Form A via the Medical Admissions webpage. The deadline for Form A is 15th October 2026. You can complete the Disrupted Studies form after this date, but the information cannot be used in the admissions process. 
  • For all other courses, please complete this form. For Veterinary Science and Dentistry, the form must be completed by 15th October 2026 to be used in the admissions process. For all other courses, the deadline is 15th July 2027.
  • If you are considering applying for September 2028 or beyond, please email disruptedstudies@liverpool.ac.uk to discuss, the form for your entry year will become available closer to the time. 

After submitting your form, you will be contacted by a member of the widening participation team to discuss any support you might need. 

Additional support 

In addition to the support offered by the Disrupted Education programme, the University offers additional support for some of the following groups:

Care leavers and care experienced students 

The University of Liverpool has been awarded the NNECL Quality Mark in recognition of our support for this group, including:

  • A named contact in the Widening Participation and Outreach team for pre-entry support: Ben Toleman
  • The Care Leavers Opportunity Bursary, worth £3,000 per year (subject to eligibility criteria)
  • A discount on University owned Halls of Residence for holders of the Care Leavers Opportunity Bursary
  • Support with fees for a guarantor scheme
  • A named contact, Martina Ferrari, in the Wellbeing, Advice and Guidance team, who can act as a link between the University, your Local Authority and any other internal or external services as required: 
  • And, if you receive an offer from the University of Liverpool, the offer will be reduced by up to two A Level grades or equivalent (excluding Medicine and Foundation programmes). Please visit the contextual admissions webpages for further details

Estranged students 

The University is proud to have made the Stand Alone pledge as part of our support for Estranged students, which also includes

  • An additional £1,000 Estranged Student bursary which can be held in conjunction with other widening participation bursaries (eligibility criteria applies)
  • A discount on University owned Halls of Residence for holders of the Care Leavers Opportunity Bursary
  • Support with fees for a guarantor scheme
  • A named contact (Clodagh Dunne) within the Wellbeing, Advice and Guidance team

Young carers 

Our support for young carers includes:

  • Young Carers Bursary; £1,000 per year, criteria applies
  • A dedicated member of staff within Student Services 
  • Carers support plans within your academic department

Asylum seekers 

To support sanctuary seeking students to access higher education, we provide a number of scholarships each year, covering tuition fees and maintenance support. Please see our Asylum Seeker Scholarships webpage for further details. 

In collaboration with our colleagues in Admissions, we provide additional pre entry guidance via our Asylum Seeker Review Form. 

Service children 

The university appreciates the challenges and barriers that children from Armed Forces families face and the Outreach is committed to supporting Service Children into The University of Liverpool. The university has a long standing partnership with the SCiP Alliance which helps the Outreach team to ensure that all Service Children can access the support they need to progress into the University. 

Support will be offered through the Disrupted Education Programme where Service Children will be supported through the admissions, accommodation and transition processes. Ben Toleman is the named contact in the Outreach team for Service Children, please get in touch to discuss the support available.
