About

I graduated from Göttingen University with a degree in German and Japanese Studies. Before joining Liverpool University in
1999 I taught at universities and Goethe Institutes in Göttingen, Tokyo and Cambridge. For my PhD I investigated the impact of independent learning practices on motivation and achievement.

I teach German language and linguistics, including general linguistics, Applied Linguistics and German Sociolinguistics. My research focuses on Applied Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Language Pedagogy. I'm interested in the impact of student and teacher traits, behaviours and affects on language learning and in the effects that environmental factors, such as teaching and institutional practices, have on the language learner. I am currently co-editing a book on ab initio language learning in the UK.

I welcome enquiries about prospective graduate studies in the field of instructed second language acquisition.
