The Department of Mathematical Sciences marked International Women in Mathematics Day with a special event on Monday 12 May, welcoming Professor Rachel Bearon back to the University of Liverpool.

Prof Bearon, now Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences at King’s College London and formerly Head of Department at Liverpool, delivered a talk titled “A Mathematician’s Journey into Biology.”

Her presentation explored the collaborative and creative nature of mathematical research, using examples from her work on the dynamics of biological systems — including bacterial chemotaxis, cancer cell motility, and phytoplankton in turbulence. Prof Bearon also reflected on the broader creative process and how music has both influenced and been influenced by her research.

A group of people seated in a classroom, focused on a presentation displayed on a projector screen.

The talk sparked many questions from the audience — some technical, others reflecting on Prof Bearon’s personal experiences and career path. She closed her talk with the quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” — a message that resonated with the spirit of the day.

Reflecting on her return to Liverpool, Prof Bearon said:
“Liverpool will always be a special place for me – I learnt a great deal during my 18 years working at the University from students, colleagues and mentors. During my time at Liverpool, I personally benefited from initiatives that actively promoted Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, so I was delighted to contribute back by speaking at this Women In Maths event”

The event brought together staff, students, and members of the Women in Maths Network for an afternoon of discussion and networking. Around 23 people had registered in advance, though attendance on the day was even higher.

Organised as part of the international May 12th initiative, the event joined a global celebration of women in mathematics. The day commemorates the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani — the first woman to win the Fields Medal — and aims to inspire women around the world to pursue and thrive in mathematical careers.
More about the initiative can be found at here.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped organise the event — and especially to Professor Bearon for returning to share her inspiring journey.
