Personal Statement

Professor Chris Butterworth was appointed as a specialist NHS Consultant in 2003 to lead the Regional Oral & Facial Prosthetic Rehabilitation service for patients with head and neck cancer. He is also the lead clinician for dental implant treatment at the Dental Hospital and provides complex oral rehabilitation for patients with oral cancer, severe maxillofacial trauma, congenital hypodontia and other complex cases.

He has a special interest in pre-prosthetic surgery and peri-implant soft tissue management as well as the use of computer aided planning and surgical execution of dental implant treatment.

He has pioneered the use of dental and zygomatic implants at primary cancer surgery as a means to provide rapid dental rehabilitation and is a recognised International leader in the field of oral cancer rehabilitation. He is the inventor of the Maxillary ZIP Flap reconstructive procedure for the management of malignant low-level maxillary tumours. ZIP Flap Technique Paper

He was appointed as an Honorary Professor in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics in 2019.
