Disability inclusion

We aim to create an environment where all people are encouraged to participate fully in our community and thrive in their role. Within this page you can find information on some of the initiatives and support available to improve inclusion across campus.

Professor Wiebe van der Hoek talks about how we are creating an inclusive environment where disabled students can participate fully and how we are working to improve the accessibility of our physical and digital campus.

Disability Confident

We are committed to the Disability Confident scheme which is a government initiative encouraging employers to think differently about disability and act to improve the employment opportunities and experiences of disabled people. We are currently a Level 2 Employer and have submitted a self-assessment to Disability Confident highlighting actions currently taken to demonstrate how we support and improve disability recruitment, retention and development. We are currently conducting a gap analysis of what improvements could be implemented to be recognised at the highest level of the Disability Confident scheme as a Level 3 Leader.

As part of our commitment to Disability Confident we will ensure that disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria as defined in the employee specification will be guaranteed the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at interview. To be considered under the scheme, disabled applicants must disclose their disability (as defined by the Equality Act 2010) and indicate that they wish to apply under the Disability Confident scheme (Guaranteed Interview Scheme) on the Equal Opportunities section of the job application.

Reasonable adjustments

We want to ensure disabled staff are given the support required to remove barriers and enable them to thrive in their role and participate fully in the University community.

Some disabled staff may already have adjustments in place or an awareness of what they require. For others without any current adjustments, job applicants, new starters or those that are newly disabled can gain advice and guidance by contacting the Diversity and Equality team by email equality@liverpool.ac.uk.

Disabled Staff Network

The Disabled Staff Network is a forum for consultation and discussion of University policy affecting University staff with regard to disability issues, raising awareness of disability issues, networking and providing support to disabled staff across the University.  It is open to all University staff with an interest in disability issues.

Campus disability access information

To ensure that people with physical disabilities or disabilities which impact mobility and travel around campus know what the access is of the buidlings they work, study or live in, we have developed a number of disability access guides for our campus.

AccessAble

AccessAble is a campus access guide for disabled people. On the website you can find detailed information about the access to the majority of the University of Liverpool campus. You can also find access guides to Liverpool council buildings and transport hubs, tourist attractions, libraries, hospitals, leisure centres - the list goes on! All access information has been collected in person by AccessAble’s team of surveyors.

Campus access map

The University is striving to build a more inclusive and accessible campus for all, where staff, students and visitors can engage fully as a part of our University community.
