Teaching

I teach a specialist modulesin marine spatial planning for postgraduate and undergraduate students. I also teach a core undergraduate module on environmental sustainability, and contribute to environmental and urban planning modules on our other planning programmes.

I teach a core undergraduate module on Environmental Sustainability, in which students explore current priorities in such things as energy supply and use, and waste and water management, in the context of the climate and biodiversity emergencies. Students develop their own projects for improving the sustainability practice of a particular social group.

I also teach marine spatial planning at undergraduate and Masters levels, exploring the global uptake of this new approach to marine governance, drawing on the long-established practices of planning on land. This is supplemented by a Masters project module, currently focusing on building social acceptance of coastal salt marshes in the north-west of England.

We are partners in the Erasmus + Strategic Partnership in Marine Spatial Planning, developing higher education capacity in marine planning and exchange opportunities for students across a number of European institutions www.msp-education.eu, and are currently developing a range of online resources.

Here's a short animation introducing the concept of marine spatial planning.
