The Liverpool Institute for Sustainable Coasts and Oceans (LISCO) combines the coastal, marine and maritime expertise of the National Oceanography Centre, the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. The Institute brings together natural scientists, social scientists and engineers to meet the challenges of a changing ocean and changing coastal societies.
Our coastlines and seas are vitally important. One third of the world’s population lives in the coastal zone and our seas and oceans are vital for transportation, food and energy production, tourism and leisure.
LISCO brings together expertise in the field of marine and coastal science. We carry out world-class research in partnership with business, stakeholders and government bodies, and with other academic institutions. We contribute new knowledge about natural and social processes and impacts in the context of global and local challenges and opportunities, such as climate change, population growth and the blue economy. We aim to support the sustainable uptake of current and upcoming opportunities, such as shipping innovations, food and energy production, biotechnology and coastal resilience.
We aim to translate science into social and environmental benefits working with commercial, policy-making and third sector communities. We also offer expert advice and seek to engage with wider communities locally and further afield.
