Liverpool wins Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge Manufacturing trophy
Undergraduate students from the University’s School of Engineering have won the Manufacturing trophy (sponsored by Siemens) at the recent IMechE Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Challenge competition.
The UAS Challenge required teams of undergraduate students to design, build and test a UAS with specific set of challenging humanitarian aid mission objectives before demonstrating its capabilities in a competitive ‘fly-off’.
The team from Liverpool undertook the project as part of their Integrated Masters Aerospace Engineering Capstone project. The team members who took part in the fly-off were: James Douthwaite, Nickolay Jelev, Fraser Hill, Gabriel Lo and Jack Shepherd. Ryan Jackson, Abby Mills and Michael Jordan were unable to make it to the competition fly-off but contributed heavily to the overall team success throughout the year.
Dr Mike Jump, Aerospace Engineering Capstone Coordinator said: “It is a proud moment for me, the staff involved in the Capstone project and the School of Engineering as a whole to see the team’s evident hard work pay off. The competition organisers commented to me on several occasions about how impressed they were with the team, their UAS and the manner in which they conducted themselves. Well done to the entire team and, as they now graduate from the University, I wish them success in their future careers, having demonstrated that they are indeed, industry-ready.”
