Volunteer members of staff and six students from the School of Dentistry recently visited Hugh Baird College in Bootle to deliver an engaging oral health workshop for learners in the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) department.

The session, delivered to over 60 students, was designed to support their knowledge with practical concepts around maintaining good oral hygiene and understanding how everyday habits can affect oral health. Throughout the afternoon, the dental team shared essential guidance on effective toothbrushing techniques through a guided brushing session as well as discussing the importance of regular oral care routines and how diet plays a key role in protecting teeth and gums.

By creating an open and interactive environment, the volunteers encouraged students to chat, ask questions and learn more about the steps they can take to improve their oral health through diet and good brushing practice. The visit also highlighted the School of Dentistry’s ongoing commitment to community outreach and preventative healthcare education.

A highlight of the session was the distribution of oral hygiene packs for participants. Thanks to the generous support of Dentaid and Curaden Global, students received donated toothbrushes and toothpaste to help them put the advice from the workshop into practice at home.

The School of Dentistry is incredibly proud of the volunteer staff and students who delivered the workshop and the positive impact they made on the day. Initiatives like this play an important role in improving access to oral health education and supporting healthier communities in the Liverpool city region.
