The School of Dentistry and Liverpool Head and Neck Centre are delighted to announce that Dr Caroline McCarthy, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine, has recently been awarded the prestigious Charles Tomes Lecturer 2025 medal by the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS), Royal College of Surgeons of England, in recognition of her contribution to oral and dental research.
The FDS Diplomate Ceremonies honour the achievements of newly qualified members and fellows who have successfully attained their professional dental qualifications. These distinguished events formally acknowledge excellence, dedication, and advancement within dentistry and provide an opportunity for diplomates to be recognised among their peers, mentors, and families.

Each year, the recipient of the Charles Tomes Lecturer medal is invited to deliver the annual Charles Tomes Lecture. At the ceremony, on 6th November 2025, Dr McCarthy addressed challenges in managing oral potentially malignant disorders, highlighting Liverpool’s innovations in diagnostics and therapeutics, and advocating for broader healthcare team involvement to promote early detection of oral cancer. Head and neck cancer is a devastating disease and is a major healthcare problem in the Liverpool region. The Liverpool Head and Neck Centre (LHNC) combines internationally recognised clinical and research strengths to deliver research-led improvements in the quality and safety of patient care. Dr. McCarthy works closely with Professor Richard Shaw and colleagues within the LHNC to lead innovative research shaping the future of oral cancer prevention.

The Dental School and Liverpool Head and Neck Centre extends its warmest congratulations to Dr McCarthy on this outstanding and well-deserved recognition.
