Dr. Jumoke Adeyemi of the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry recently travelled to Accra, Ghana, at the invite of the Ghanaian Doctors and Dentists Association UK (GDDA-UK) to participate in the inaugural Ghana International Dental Scientific Conference 2025. This landmark event was designed to elevate dental science in Ghana by fostering knowledge exchange, professional networking, and continuing education for clinicians across the country.

Held at the end of May, the conference featured a dynamic program of workshops, lectures, and panel discussions, all focused on delivering cutting-edge, evidence-based insights to dental professionals working on the front lines of oral healthcare in Ghana.

Dr. Adeyemi delivered a compelling lecture titled “Periodontitis – Impact on Systemic Health and Need for Action,” where she highlighted the far-reaching effects of periodontal disease. Her presentation explored its strong associations with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, while also offering practical strategies for screening and management. She also facilitated four ‘hands on workshops’ focused on optimising non-surgical periodontal therapy outcomes.

Beyond the conference hall, Dr. Adeyemi engaged with the wider public through several television and radio appearances. She participated in conversations about the importance of oral hygiene, discussed effective brushing techniques and advocated for evidence-based dentistry as a cornerstone of public health. You can see her appearance on the ChannelOne Breakfast Daily show here.

In a gesture of solidarity and support, Dr. Adeyemi on behalf of the School of Dentistry, made a generous donation of dental instruments to both the University of Ghana Dental School and the University for Development Studies Dental School in Tamale. These contributions are expected to enhance clinical training and improve access to quality dental care across Ghana.

The University of Liverpool and Dr. Adeyemi received heartfelt letters of appreciation from Dr. Pamela Abban Ohene Djan, Conference Convener, and Professor Sanda Ama Hewlett, Dean of the University of Ghana Dental School, acknowledging the impact of the donation and the spirit of collaboration it represents.
