Bringing acoustics to life for an multinational customer

When an international furnishings group contacted the university about acoustics training for its team, Dr Gary Seiffert knew that the existing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Environment Noise Measurement course wasn’t the right fit for the group’s unique needs.

Dr Gary Seiffert is Senior Research Fellow and Short Course Organiser for the Acoustics Research Unit which falls under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The potential customer contacted the University of Liverpool to help with its workplace development requirements because of the University’s status as a member of the Russell Group and its world leading Acoustics Research Unit, which is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics.

When the potential customer asked if its team would benefit from the existing CPD course, Dr Seiffert it would be more beneficial if they worked with the University to create a bespoke course to address their exact business challenge.

The customer visited the unit and was impressed by the state of the art equipment and test chambers which really sets the workplace development available from the University apart from a course run in a hotel, for example, with no access to such facilities. It’s more than a classroom experience - the facilities available in the Acoustics Research Unit gives participants the unique advantage of being able to hear and see acoustic phenomena before they even go outside the door.

The customer met with Dr Seiffert and explained exactly what they needed the course to cover from a industrial point of view and they worked together to create a unique solution which addressed all of their requirements. The programme they created was designed for senior members of the team across design, sales and marketing disciplines and was planned across two days as the organisation couldn’t afford to lose staff for more than that amount of time. There was no examination involved in the programme and participants received CPD credits for completing the course.

Following the two-day course, feedback was excellent - the participants reported that they hadn’t had an easy time and that they had left feeling a lot wiser about the field of acoustics. Everyone who took part left with high quality course materials to take back to their offices and refer to when required.
