University joins Northern Triangle Mentor Network to fuel regional innovation
The University of Liverpool is officially joining the Northern Triangle Mentor Network (NTMN), expanding a powerful collaborative initiative designed to bridge the gap between world-class academic research and commercial success.
Originally established in 2024 with funding from the Research England Connecting Capability Fund, the NTMN connects academics from the universities of Leeds, Manchester, and Sheffield with highly experienced business leaders, Spin Out founders and serial entrepreneurs. By joining the network, the University of Liverpool strengthens a regional programme dedicated to supporting the transformation of academic research and intellectual property into thriving commercial ventures.
In its first 18 months, the Northern Triangle Mentor Network has:
- Supported over 75 academics in their commercialisation journeys.
- Provided over 650 hours of mentoring.
- Facilitated the launch of 9 new spin-out companies.
- Delivered a diverse programme of support, including speed-mentoring events, long-term 1-1 mentorship, and a dedicated podcast addressing the unique challenges of academic entrepreneurship.
The network’s mentor pool features a high-calibre roster of experts, ranging from successful spin-out founders and subject matter experts to senior executives from global corporations.
Emma Nolan, Head of Enterprise at the University of Liverpool, commented:
"We’ve seen first-hand the transformative impact this network has had across the North. The mentors involved have played a crucial role in shaping high-potential spin-outs and navigating complex commercial opportunities.
Our academics will benefit immensely from the lived experience of these business leaders and founders. This partnership ensures our researchers have the guidance they need to see their ventures flourish on the global stage."
Ken Nettleship, NTMN Community Manager, welcomed the expansion:
"We are thrilled to welcome the University of Liverpool into the fold. Bringing in a new partner of this calibre is vital as we continue to grow the ecosystem we’re developing across Northern England.
By pooling our resources and expertise, we are ensuring the next generation of innovators has the best possible support to turn bright ideas into impactful businesses."
The expansion comes at a pivotal time as the network prepares for its next “Innovation Sprint” speed mentoring event, which will be hosted at the University of Manchester’s Core Technology Facility in February 2026.
