Abstract:
Falling behind on household bill payments is a particularly harmful form of debt (Salter, 2014) and can affect the ability of individuals to access necessities such as housing and energy (Lane et al, 2018).
This research explores populations who have fallen behind on payments for household bills between 2009 and 2022 in the UK. This study investigates how the level of the UK population falling behind on household bills has varied over time and across population subgroups. This study also investigates which individual characteristics underlie the likelihood of an individual being behind on household bill payments. This research utilises descriptive analysis and longitudinal multilevel modelling.
This research furthers understanding of social inequalities in the UK. It is hoped that this analysis will further understanding on what factors drive this form of indebtedness and how policy makers can support populations affected by this form of debt.
