IFAM/Barnett Waddingham LLP internship
Barnett Waddingham LLP is the UK’s largest independent provider of actuarial, administration and consultancy services. The firm has over 750 staff, including 64 partners and 131 actuaries. It was founded in 1989 and has grown predominantly through referrals from clients and professional contacts.
The Institute for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (IFAM) and Barnett Waddingham LLP have been offering unpaid work placements since 2015. The internship usually takes place in June, and placements are with the Pensions team in the Liverpool Office. It is available for a maximum of three students, who can be second or third year undergraduates, or postgraduates from the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Further information for current students is available from the maths careers noticeboard on Canvas.
MATH309 Mathematics Internship
MATH309 offers a placement in which students explore a mathematical topic under the supervision of an academic at an overseas university. More information is available on the Global Opportunities page.
MATH391 Summer Industrial Research Project
MATH391 is a credit-bearing module in which students complete a summer research internship between years 2 and 3. Working under the supervision of a member of academic staff and a PhD student, students complete a research project over a six-week period, leading up to a final team presentation delivered to a professional audience. Students on eligible programmes will be contacted about the opportunity to register for this module by the departmental careers and employability lead.
EPSRC Vacation Internships
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) offers a limited number of paid internships to high-performing undergraduate students. These internships take place during the summer between students' penultimate and final years and involve work on a mathematics research project supervised by a member of academic staff. Applications need to be submitted some time before the project takes place, so interested students should speak to potential supervisors during semester 1 of year 2 (year 3 for MMath students). Further information is available here. Potential supervisors who have queries about the application process should contact Ian Thompson.
Taking part in a Summer Internship was one of the best ideas I had at University. The internship allowed me to really see what my job would be like before committing to it fully and gave me the opportunity to already have 6 weeks' worth of experience under my belt and friends already in the firm, before starting the following year.
