Prof Carsten P Welsch
Institution: University of Liverpool
Role: LIV.INNO Director
With a background in physics and economics from Frankfurt and UC Berkeley, and a PhD in accelerator physics, I lead research at the interface of data-intensive science, accelerator innovation, and advanced research training. I founded the QUASAR Group in 2007 and have been an academic staff at the University of Liverpool and the Cockcroft Institute since 2008. I became Full Professor in 2011 and served as Head of Physics from 2016 - 2023, during which time the Department rose to a top-10 UK ranking.
My research focuses on low-energy antimatter physics, advanced beam instrumentation, and accelerator technologies, all underpinned by data intensive science. My group has developed novel diagnostics used in international research facilities, including non-invasive gas jet monitors and cryogenic current comparators for ultra-low beam intensities. As Director of LIV.INNO and former coordinator of six EU-funded training networks (€25M, 100+ Marie Curie Fellows), I am deeply engaged in shaping large-scale research training. I have held major national roles in research strategy, including Chair of STFC’s Education, Training & Careers Committee and member of STFC Council, UKRI Infrastructure Advisory Group, and the UKRI Skills and Talent Advisory Group.
I collaborate closely with industry and policy makers to translate fundamental science into real-world applications and help steer long-term national and international research agendas. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, advisor to governments and funders, and regular organizer of scientific events and public outreach, with a global reach.
