Environmental responsibility
Learn about our commitment to environmental protection, our strategy for minimising environmental impact on construction sites, compliance with ISO 14001:2015, and the steps we take to ensure sustainable practices, from reducing emissions to responsible waste management.
At ULCCO Special Projects Limited, we understand that our activities can significantly impact the environment.
We are dedicated to protecting the planet and reducing our environmental footprint both locally and globally.
Our Senior Management Team is committed to ensuring that our policies are implemented in every aspect of our work and made accessible to anyone connected to ULCCO SP.
We will implement an Environmental Strategy focused on operating construction sites that are safe and free from environmental hazards to the company, sub-contractors, employees, and members of the public.
Our goal
Our goal is zero environmental incidents which will be achieved through continuous improvement, following relevant legislation, and meeting the objectives set out in our Environmental Management System, certified to the ISO 14001:2015 standard.
To make this strategy a reality, ULCCO Special Projects will:
- Support workforce development and training
- Conduct site-based inductions for everyone working on-site
- Foster open communication with the workforce
- Identify and adopt best practices
- Collaborate with local and national authorities to ensure compliance.
The biggest need identified within the policy is compliance with all legal and other requirements including the ULCCO SP Environmental, Safety and Quality Management Systems.
The company values are actively promoted to all individuals within the Company and all the directors and staff are committed to ensuring that negative impacts are minimised, and sustainability is promoted.
To prevent pollution and continually improve its environmental performance, we will operate an Environmental Management System (EMS) accredited to ISO 14001:2015, the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems.
To ensure the company is committed to obey all legal, regulatory and other requirements, all workplaces, both permanent and temporary, will address aspects and impacts through the development and maintenance of environmental and waste management plans.
Our commitment to the environment
Our commitment to the environment includes:
- Monitoring energy and utility usage
- Managing emissions like noise, dust, and fumes
- Handling waste responsibly
- Addressing contaminated land
- Prioritising sustainable purchasing.
Working closely with designers and clients, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of the materials used in every project through improved specifications and design.
Ongoing employee training, supplier engagement, and collaboration with stakeholders are key to successfully implementing our Environmental Management System.
Waste management
We conduct pre-demolition waste audits and aim to implement ISO 50001 for energy management.
We are working with the University of Liverpool’s Sustainability Team looking at waste management and ways to reduce waste.
The process will require the cooperation of our supply chain, ensuring everyone takes ownership of the waste management for the varying elements of works associated with our projects.
We already carryout ‘pre-demolition’ waste audits on all of our larger projects to help establish a base line for monitoring waste. This information is used to compare against the actual waste production records and make recommendations for improvements.
The ethos across all our site regarding waste management will be inline with the hierarchy of waste management:
Our waste management ethos follows:
Reduce - Reuse - Recycle - Recover - Dispose
Working with academics and colleagues within professional services at the University, we are looking at initiatives such as reducing plastics from the construction process along with setting up a recycling centre for excess and waste materials to be re-used on other projects or offered to the local community and charities to be put to good use.
Building Information Modelling (BIM)
ULCCO Special projects are a fully accredited BIM Level 2 main contractor, with BSI kitemark accreditation to the following standards :
- BS EN ISO 19650-2:2018 organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM) – Information management using building information modelling. Part 2: Delivery phase of the assets.
- Lead Appointed Party (Tier 1) contractor including Design, Construction, Project and Information management, and client BIM representative services complying with BIM in accordance with ISO 19650-2:2018.
Using our in-house BIM suite of documentation, we can offer our client a bespoke Common Data Environment (CDE) that suits their exact needs at the University of Liverpool.
As a business, we utilise Revit and Navisworks to allow exchange of information between different 3-D models within the CDE; we have also invested in other digital hardware and software, which enables us to work more effectively with our in house client, design teams and supply chain members.
Our business has made a significant investment in BIM and digital technology and its training requirements, recently adopting BIM on our latest contracts of the New Yoko Ono Lennon Centre incorporating the Tung Auditorium, the New School of Architecture and the School of Environmental Science project, located on South, Central and North Campus.
Our Design Managers, and operational teams have participated in BIM training and can offer project specific BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) to suit the requirements of the clients Exchange Information Requirements (EIRs).
Our other digital technologies include Viewpoint, our common data environment, Bluebeam, our software for document information exchange and drawing mark-ups, and Dalux our model viewer. We are also pleased to announce that we have more recently extended our planning software knowledge having used Elecosoft Power Project for many years, we are now introducing 4D into our business with real time planning charts incorporating the 3D model, allowing us to see our projects being built in accordance with and alongside our bar chart programmes.
We have found the benefits for working in BIM include:
- Effective collaboration between our client, design teams, supply chain and ourselves
- Options for our construction staff and our client to view latest models and design information on the CDE
- Speedy and effective document management & control
- Clash detection, saving cost and programme
- Use of Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) data format for consistent classification of assets during aftercare and Facilities Management
- Full compliance with Hackett’ “Golden Thread” of information.
