Inclusive Mentoring for Clinical Psychologists
It is widely acknowledged that clinical psychology needs to diversify its workforce in order to be more representative of the community it serves. There are many developments occurring locally and nationally as we work towards this goal. One of the initiatives funded by Health Education England is to develop and improve mentoring schemes for Aspiring Clinical Psychologists.
To support those entering the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) with the University of Liverpool, we have established a mentorship programme for aspiring psychologists from the global majority / an ethnically minoritised background. The scheme connects applicants with experienced professionals who can offer personalised career support and professional development, supporting growth and helping to make academia a more inclusive space.
The mentoring scheme offers group and individual direct mentoring opportunities, inclusive events, and CPD opportunities. It connects people of global majority who are finding their way into the profession, with Trainees, DClinPsy staff, qualified clinical psychologists, and community mentors.
What do mentoring spaces look like?
A mentoring session is a space to speak freely in a way that provides safety and connectedness. Whether they are large or small group sessions, or individual mentoring spaces, we work hard to make all our sessions feel comfortable and meaningful. Our events and resources are always built in a collaborative and co-productive manner. We feel proud to connect with a wide range of community members, from within and outside clinical psychology. Our ethos is one of valuing all voices, and finding the balance between being challenging enough to promote growth, and compassionate enough to feel safe. We are on a learning journey together. Examples of areas we have explored include:
- How do our personal and professional identities interact?
- How do we lean into our individual identity in new spaces?
- Integrating culturally diverse understandings into clinical psychology
- Practical aspects of clinical psychology training; applications, support systems, examples of teaching sessions, research, and placements.
- Discussions with various stakeholders, including staff, Trainees, and lived experience groups, and local clinicians.
Video guidance for mentees.
If you are currently involved in our mentorship scheme, a series of videos and guided tours have been created to help you navigate and orientate yourself on campus. Additionally, some of our mentors and mentees have shared their experiences of the scheme, to help address any concerns or answer questions you may have.
