Abortion Law Reform Strategies
Abortion law reform movements involve a broad constellation of actors and often takes years of committed activity to bring about change.
About this project
This project is led by Dr Claire Pierson and investigates the discourses and strategies used by abortion law reform movements. The first part of the project investigates strategies used in Northern Ireland and was written with Dr Fiona Bloomer of Ulster University with research support from Liza Caruana-Finkel (University of Liverpool). The briefing paper document and accompanying animation are based on the authors' research findings and workshop discussions with abortion rights activists and were funded by a University of Liverpool impact grant.
Current research led by Dr Pierson, funded by the British Academy (SRG2223\230888), considers the case of Malta. Malta has some of Europe's most restrictive abortion laws and a growing movement for change. Our research examines the momentum for change in this moment interrogating the strategies and discourses of activists, how abortion rights activists are able to make diverse coalitions with wider social justice movements and how Maltese activism is situated within the global abortion rights movement. See briefing paper below for initial findings.
