Sophie Pickup graduated last year, and is now working as a Cyber Security Consultant for Daintta

I am a proud First-Class International Politics and Policy BA (Hons), class of 2023. My time at Liverpool was marked by academic excellence and active involvement in various roles, on campus and outside. It was filled with memories, not just including nights out and amazing friendships, but invaluable opportunities, both provided and sought, to excel in expanding and diversifying my skillset to aid in securing a dream job!

Having successfully secured a place on a 3-month Civil Service Fast Stream Internship for the summer post graduating whilst studying, I was lucky enough to be placed in a team working on streamlining cyber security strategies alongside the Cabinet Office. The Civil Service excelled in all aspects, and I would urge anyone unsure of applying to do so. It opened my eyes to opportunities and careers I would never have thought of, and included very cool site visits, including to Number 10!

Networking proved crucial as I connected with someone at an event during my internship, leading to an opportunity at Daintta, a consultancy firm based in both Cheltenham and Westminster, focused on National Security, Law Enforcement, Telecommunications, and Health & Care sectors. After successfully completing the recruitment process, I now work as a Cyber Security Consultant for them, ensuring the safety of our clients’ cyber networks, and contributing to the success of the company and ultimately adding to the UK’s cyber safety!

During my studies, I undertook a semester placement at Medical Detection Dogs as part of the Politics in Action module which was invaluable for my experience working in a mature team and my first introduction to hybrid working. Additionally, I served as a Career Coach for two academic years in the University’s Careers Department which enabled skill development, and later as a Student Ambassador in my final academic year. I held the position of social and welfare secretary at LUSAC for two years, and I was a dedicated course and student representative throughout my studies. Throughout my studies and post-graduation prior to working in the Civil Service, I worked on behalf of Lego and Camelot as a promotional representative which further aided in diversifying my skillset enabling me to secure my current dream role.

My favourite modules included Dr Hannes Baumann’s Comparative Politics of the Middle East and North Africa, Dr Alexander MacKenzie’s From the IRA to ISIS: Understanding Political Violence in the Contemporary World, and my dissertation, titled, Can differences in colonial policy help to explain variation in post-colonial economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa?

My future career aims include continued growth in the field of cybersecurity, leveraging my skills and experiences to make impactful contributions. I am excited about the journey ahead and grateful for the strong foundation and support I received during my time at the University of Liverpool. I would urge anyone unsure of the path they want to go down to try as many things as possible, because you never know what may come of it!
