About

Dr Tom Whittaker is a specialist in Film and Spanish Cultural Studies. Before joining the University of Liverpool, Tom taught Film Studies at the University of Kingston and London Metropolitan University. His initial research focussed on two areas: the overlooked role of the producer in Spanish film, and the relationship between geography and Spanish film. His first monograph, The Films of Elías Querejeta: A Producer of Landscapes (UWP), was published in 2011.

More recently, Tom’s research has been concerned with sound in Spanish film and culture, with articles exploring aspects of vocal performance, dubbing, soundscapes and music. He has recently completed two edited volumes: Performance and Spanish Film (Manchester University Press, 2016), with Alejandro Melero and Dean Allbritton, and Locating the Voice in Film: Critical Approaches and Global Practices (Oxford University Press, 2016) with Sarah Wright. Tom is currently completing a monograph entitled Deviant Noise: Quinquis, Criminality, and Sound in Spanish Film.

Tom teaches on various aspects of Film Studies (Spanish and Latin American film, Hollywood and European cinema) and Hispanic Studies. He welcomes PhD applicants in any area of Spanish film. He is an Assistant Editor of Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, the Reviews Editor of Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas and the Postgraduate Officer for Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland.
