About

My work focuses on sociolinguistics, pragmatics, second language acquisition and translation and interpreting in public service settings.

After completing a five-year undergraduate degree specialising in English Philology at the University of Murcia (Licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras, 1991), I worked as a language assistant and part-time lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University while studying part-time for a Modular MA at the University of Salford (translation, interpreting, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, cultural theory and textual criticism). From 1995 to 1998 I coordinated the development and validation of the Spanish strand of the BA Modern Languages at the University of Bournemouth while working part-time towards a PhD Linguistics at the University of Manchester. In 1998 I moved to Northumbria University, where I was responsible for the Spanish university-wide language programmes (Spanish as a major and minor degree subject) and co-supervised the Postgraduate Programme in Hispanic Studies. I went on to teach at the University of Exeter (2009-2010) while completing an MA English Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University. From 2011-2018 I worked at Lancaster University, where I led the development and validation of the Distance MA Translation before becoming Chair of the Language Committee in 2018. From January 2019 to December 2022 I was based at the University of Sussex, where I worked on the design and validation of the MA in Translation Studies and served as Director of Student Wellbeing for Year 1 and postgraduate students across the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities. In January 2023 I joined the University of Liverpool, where I have convened twelve teaching teams across undergraduate and postgraduate levels to date.
