Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, Entry 2024

What are my chances of getting the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship if I apply?

There is one scholarship available for entry 2024.  This is a new scholarship, but typically, we receive a high number of applications for all of our scholarships. The scholarship is competitive and you should attempt to complete your application to the very highest standard if you wish to be seriously considered. If you have questions about how to complete the application, please contact: wpscholarships@liverpool.ac.uk.

I do not identify as one of the ethnic groups listed in the eligibility criteria.  Can I still apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

To be eligible to apply for the Scholarship you must identify as belonging to one of the following ethnic groups: 

  1. Black or Black British – Caribbean
  2. Black or Black British – African
  3. Mixed - White and Black Caribbean
  4. Mixed - White and Black African
  5. Other Black background

My household income is above £25,000.  Can I still apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

No, the scholarship is open to applicants with an annual household income of £25,000 or less.

Am I able to apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship if I get a place at Liverpool through clearing or adjustment?

We will contact all scholarship applicants by 1st September 2024 to let them know if they have been successful or not. Therefore, we are not able to consider applicants who are coming to Liverpool through clearing or adjustment.

I am a current student at the University of Liverpool, having enrolled in September 2023 or earlier.  Can I apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

We only accept applications from new students who are applying to the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree programme, to commence study in the 2024-2025 academic year.

I am currently studying at another UK university, but would like to transfer to Liverpool and apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship.

We only accept applications from students beginning a new course at Liverpool. You cannot apply for the scholarship if you are transferring to Liverpool.

I have already obtained an undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree. Can I apply for the Scholarship?

No, the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship is only available for students undertaking undergraduate study for the first time, or whose qualifications are below that of UK bachelor degree level.

I will be undertaking a postgraduate degree programme at the University of Liverpool. Can I apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

No, you cannot apply if you are undertaking a postgraduate programme. Only those studying undergraduate courses can apply for the Scholarship.

I have chosen the University of Liverpool as my ‘Insurance’ choice through UCAS.  Can I still apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

No, you cannot apply for the scholarship unless you have made the University of Liverpool your ‘Firm’ choice through UCAS. 

I would like to apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, but I cannot afford the UCAS application fee to apply for my chosen course. Do you offer any funding for the UCAS application?

No, unfortunately there is no funding available for this.

Are any subjects/courses at the University of Liverpool excluded from the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship?

There are no subject/course exclusions at the University of Liverpool.

My fee status has been assessed as an EU or International student.  Can I apply for the Scholarship?

To be eligible to apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, your fee status must have been (or expected to be) assessed as a 'Home' student.

I have not made an application for UK government financial support for higher education e.g. Student Finance.  Can I still apply for the Scholarship?

In order to apply for the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, you must have made an application to your regional student funding authority for income assessed UK government financial support for higher education students. The regional student funding authorities are: Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. 

We will require confirmation that you will be in receipt of full financial support for the 2024-2025 academic year; please ensure that you have given consent to share the information with the University, as this information will be used to determine eligibility.

If I am successful in receiving the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, will I receive a University of Liverpool bursary alongside it?

Yes, you are able to hold the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship in conjunction with an applicable University of Liverpool bursary.

Depending on your circumstances, you will receive one of the following:

  1. The Liverpool Bursary
  2. The Liverpool Scholars Award
  3. The Realising Opportunities Award
  4. The North Liverpool Academy Scholarship
  5. The Liverpool Life Sciences UTC Scholarship
  6. The Care Leavers Opportunity Bursary.

Additionally, if you are eligible then you can be assessed for one of the following awards as well:

  1. The Young Adult Carers Bursary
  2. The Estranged Student Bursary

Selection process

This is a competitive process and not all applications will be successful. A panel of University staff will shortlist the strongest applications.  The shortlist will be sent to The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation who will make the final decisions.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their Cowrie Foundation Scholarship application during the first week of September 2024.
