Sebastian is Senior Lecturer in Planning with an interest in urban transformation, planning law, comparative planning studies and data science. His research has been published in leading journals in the field of urban and planning studies.
Recent research projects were funded by the ESRC on suburban densification, RTPI on National Development Management Policies and the Scottish Land Commission on land allocation, assembly and delivery in Europe. Sebastian has co-edited special issues on Enhancing understanding of strategies of land policy for urban densification (with Thomas Hartmann, Andreas Hengstermann and Richard Dunning), Small towns in the metropolitan age: an introduction (with Christophe Demazière and Divya Leducq in the Journal of Spatial Development), and Unmaking plans: enforcement, modification and the erosion of consent (with Hannah Hickman, Katie McClymont and Rebecca Leshinsky in disP – The Planning Review).
Sebastian is currently Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Lead for the School of Environmental Sciences and Chair of the Curriculum Board. He is a member of various Faculty and University committees, including Faculty Scrutiny Panel, Faculty Academic Quality and Standards Committee, Faculty Education Committee, University Education Committee and University Approval Panel.
Sebastian teaches extensively on the planning programmes, in particular in relation to urban and regional planning, and is an experienced PhD supervisor with eleven completions und his guidance.
Before joining the department in 2014, Sebastian worked as a postdoc researcher at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he also obtained his PhD in spatial planning. Sebastian holds a degree in Spatial Planning from TU Dortmund University.
