Introduction to Ethics for Bio-Science and Bio-Engineering & Technology

Those who work in the medical sector are often confronted with moral questions related to use of bioengineering and technology within the healthcare environment.

This module is designed for professionals and students who are working at (and have an interest in) the interface between health, engineering, and technology and who are new to the study of ethics these areas.

Students will receive teaching and learning in a range of ethical theories and relevant themes including (but not limited to):

1) Key ethical theories and principles in health including: Principlism, Consequentilaism, consent, confidentiality autonomy and paternalism.
2) Theoretical concepts underpinning research ethics and ethical research
3) the opportunity to apply learning to topics in health and health research
4) Study skill for ethics encompassing: writing and reading academic ethics, case analysis and argument construction and deconstruction.

The module is assessed through two written assignments with one focusing on argument analysis and the other on argument construction, with both drawing on topic areas covered in the course.
