Advanced Practice in Palliative and End of Life Care for Children and Young People

Code: MDSC163

Credits: 30

Semester: Semester 1

End of Life and Palliative Care for children and young people (CYP) is a growing specialty, the key driver for which is placing the child and their family at the centre of care enabling choice in care, place of care, and place of death. The challenge requires a flexible workforce to deliver expert complex care and symptom management, utilising effective advanced communication skills and appropriate leadership and management skills to direct this care.

This module provides students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of contemporary palliative and end-of-life care provision for children and young people. It is designed for all health and social care professionals working predominantly in CYP palliative care who wish to enhance their knowledge and expertise to deliver high-quality care, including how to assess, treat, and direct patient care for complex palliative and end of life issues in children and young people, and their families. The module will highlight further global practices of CYP palliative care that can be applicable locally and further enhance a collaborative approach to care.

The module uses a blended approach to learning engaging a mix of online and classroom-based activities, encouraging both critical reflection and examination of clinical management and organisational practice. National and international academic and clinical experts will lead teaching.

Liverpool’s School of Medicine is ideally located for access to some of the UK’s leading specialist clinical units. A week’s structured observational clinical placement is offered to students within a specialist CYP palliative care unit/hospice. Students will also benefit from the expertise within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and from surrounding medical institutions.

The module will be delivered with a blended approach to learning, involving a combination of classroom and online-based activities. On successful completion of this module, students will achieve 30 academic credits at M Level (7).
