We offer a blended learning model, comprising:
- Weekly on-campus classes, held in-person in a physical classroom, usually on campus in Liverpool or sometimes at our partner venues, such as Ness Botanic Gardens or TATE Liverpool
- Weekly online sessions, where you join other students and the course tutor in a virtual classroom, usually using Zoom
- One-day workshops.
We indicate how a course is taught on each individual course page. Some online courses will blend the core, live online sessions with opportunities for in-person face-to-face activity. This could be on campus or around the city at locations such as museums or galleries. These will normally be optional activities rather than course requirements, though the course description will make this clear.
The University campus is available to you as a student of the University irrespective of whether you're studying on campus or online. Additional support material is also provided through Canvas, our virtual learning environment, irrespective of the primary mode of delivery of your course.
In addition to taught sessions, we'll provide a variety of optional face-to-face activities for Continuing Education students throughout the academic year. These include initiatives such as library and campus tours, social feedback events, and academic talks.
What are the online sessions like?
We know the social aspects of our courses are important to our students and our tutors will ensure their sessions are interactive, engaging and welcoming for students.
The virtual classroom is simply a Zoom meeting that's unique to each course. Taking place live, in real time, you'll be able to see and hear both the tutor and other students, who'll be able to see and hear you. Your tutor will lead the session with a mixture of lecturing, presentations and group discussions.
You can ‘arrive’ early and chat to other students, arrange you own study or discussion groups between taught sessions, and even use the virtual classroom as somewhere to meet up for a chat and a coffee.
What computer equipment will you need?
You'll need to have an email account and an IT device such as a personal computer (PC or Mac), a laptop, or a tablet/iPad that can connect to the internet.
If you're taking an online course, your device should also have a functioning camera, speakers and microphone. In many cases a ‘smart’ mobile phone may be sufficient, especially to access talks and lectures. You need the facility to open and read documents, and to create and upload files if your course requires that you complete and submit work.
When you enrol on an online course, you'll be sent an email with a link to the Zoom classroom, which you'll be able to access free of charge.
How will you submit work?
All work will be submitted electronically, either by emailing a file to your tutor or uploading it to a dedicated webspace. You will be given clear instructions for each piece of work on how to submit it.
