Weekly cultural events
Join one of our FREE weekly cultural activities running across the first term during Spring and Summer term 2026. All sessions are open to all, students, staff and members of the public.
Paper-cutting & thread beaded handicraft 剪纸与串珠手工制作
Mondays 1pm - 2pm
Starting 27th April 2026 - 8th June 2026.
27th April - Cut Double Happiness & Fu
Introduction to the culture of Chinese paper-cutting, and learn to cut the classic double happiness character and “Fu” (blessing) character, which represent good luck and joy in Chinese tradition.
4th May - Cut and Carve Horse
Introduction to the Chinese Twelve Zodiac animals, and learn to cut and carve the horse pattern, a symbol of vigour and success.
11th May - Cut and Carve Dragon
Learn to carve the dragon, a divine totem in Chinese culture that symbolises power, good fortune and prosperity.
18th May - Cut and Carve Panda
Create the lovely panda pattern—China’s national treasure—through paper-cutting and carving, experiencing the fun of shaping vivid images with simple paper.
25th May - Cut and Carve Liver Bird
Cut and carve the Liver Bird pattern, integrating Chinese paper-cutting skills with regional characteristics.
1st June - Thread Beaded Dragonfly
Teach basic beading techniques and start making a delicate beaded dragonfly.
8th June - Thread Beaded Goldfish
Learn to make a beaded goldfish, which represents surplus and good fortune in Chinese culture.
Chinese pop dance 中国流行舞
Mondays 3pm - 4pm
Restarting 20th April 2026 for 10 weeks until 22nd June 2026.
Learn a range of Chinese dancing moves. The first seven weeks will focus on learning a choreographed dance piece alongside basic skills. With the remaining sessions for polishing the group's work.

22nd April – Chinese Tea Culture: More Than a Drink 中国茶文化:不止于一杯茶
Explore the history and varieties of Chinese tea, learn about the Gongfu tea ceremony, and discuss the role of tea in daily life and social interactions.
29th April – Chinese Zodiac and Fortune Tales 中国生肖与运势故事
Discover the 12 zodiac animals, their personality traits, and how they influence Chinese people’s views on luck, compatibility, and New Year traditions.
6th May – Weekend in China: From Sleepovers to City Hops 中国年轻人的周末:从宅家到城市漫游
Compare how young Chinese spend their weekends – staying in with bubble tea and gaming, hanging out at malls and KTV, or taking “special forces” trips to nearby cities.
13th May – Chinese Cinema Beyond Kung Fu 中国电影:不止功夫
Introduce critically acclaimed directors like Jia Zhangke and Wong Kar-wai, watch short clips from films like In the Mood for Love and Still Life, and discuss how Chinese movies reflect modern society.
Traditional Chinese painting 国画主题
Thursdays 3pm - 4pm

Create your own works of Chinese art while also learning traditional techniques.
23rd April – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Introduction to the fundamentals of Chinese landscape painting, including brush handling, ink control, and the basic structure of rocks and mountains. Students will learn essential texture strokes (cunfa) to build form and depth.
30th April – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Focus on developing mountain forms and refining texture strokes. Students will explore different methods of representing natural surfaces and begin constructing simple landscape compositions.
7th May – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Introduction to tree painting techniques, including various brush methods for trunks, branches, and foliage. Emphasis on integrating trees naturally within the landscape.
14th May – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Exploration of water elements, clouds, and atmospheric effects. Students will learn how to create a sense of space and movement within their compositions.
21st May – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Focus on compositional structure, learning how to balance mountains, trees, and water. Students will begin planning a more complete and cohesive landscape scene.
28th May – Chinese Landscape Painting (国画山水)
Development of a full landscape composition, with attention to layering, depth, and harmony. Students will refine their brushwork and strengthen their individual style.
4th June – Chinese Landscape Painting (Final Composition) 国画山水(完整作品)
Final session dedicated to completing a full landscape painting, focusing on composition, tonal balance, detailed refinement, and personal artistic expression.
