Talk with Ding Wenjun
Thursday 26th June 2025 (5-6pm)
Title: Industrial Heritage and the Memory Representation: an aesthetic study of state-owned factories in South China
DING Wenjun is an Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou, China), and was a visiting scholar at Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (2016—2018). His research interests focus on the sociological theory of literature and art, including the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory and Contemporary Chinese Urban Culture.
In order to discuss the possibility of industrial heritage as a space for aesthetic education, the article takes the artistic transformation of the State-owned Zini Sugar Factory(紫坭糖厂) in Guangdong Province as the case study. The Zini Tang(紫泥堂) project is in a stagnant stage, forming the spectacle that is different from the mature artistic space, which is the topographic structure of living space and production space adjacent to each other. This is a ruin space with dual meanings. Firstly, it is the ruin of the spectacle that the original abandoned state of the production space can be preserved for a long time that the artistic creation does not change the overall structure of the factory area; At the same time, the cross-generational memory that represented by the adjacent living space and production space is in a state of mutual penetration, which is the ruins in the philosophical sense of Walter Benjamin. This is another model for the development of industrial heritage that activates the value of the memory by placing the spectacles in the development course of the communities, which shows the path to construct Guangzhou's urban culture from the perspective of production.
