If you study Industrial Design BEng at XJTLU, you can study Product Design Engineering BEng (Hons) at the University of Liverpool on the XJTLU 2+2 programme. View other pathway options or see all XJTLU 2+2 programmes.

Product Design Engineering BEng (Hons)

Product Design Engineering BEng (Hons) offers a unique combination of human-centred design and new product development with advanced engineering knowledge. It is the discipline and professional practice of creating functional, innovative and meaningful products based on research, design, ergonomics, manufacturing processes and technology.

The programme provides enhanced careers and employability opportunities based on real-world briefs and research-led teaching. All of this results in a truly modern engineering degree that provides you with a solid, technical grounding in engineering and design-thinking, that prepares you for a successful career in industry.

You’ll learn advanced product design knowledge in design communication, human factors and ergonomics, product development and project management. You’ll also study core engineering subjects, such as solids and structures, materials, manufacturing systems, electronics and computer programming. These foundations will give you an understanding of the science that underpins product design engineering.

Then, you’ll move on to advanced engineering science, working on complex design engineering projects that reflect real-life in industry. Unique to this programme is a 300-hour individual product design engineering project on a topic of your choice, which demonstrates your design and engineering knowledge, as well as practical design skills.

Discover what you'll learn, what you'll study, and how you'll be taught and assessed.

Year three

You’ll be introduced to design theory modules that will help you develop your own understanding of design. You’ll learn how to respond to design briefs through the analysis of user requirements, scenarios, product specifications, and the application of design methodologies, frameworks and product visualisation and simulation environments. At the same time, you’ll build engineering skills studying mathematics, materials, solids and structures and engineering design, alongside management modules.

On the 2+2 programme, you'll study your third and fourth years at the University of Liverpool. These will be year two and year three of the University of Liverpool's programme of study.

Programme details and modules listed are illustrative only and subject to change.

Year four

In year four, there will be more complex design briefs and open-ended projects based on design and engineering science. You’ll have the opportunity to apply your skills and theoretical knowledge gained in the previous year. You’ll get to work on some exciting real-world design and engineering briefs. Alongside this, you’ll continue learning about product visualisation and simulation, materials, manufacturing, mechatronics and management.
