The Management School has welcomed over 40 doctoral students from 26 universities to its third Operations and Supply Management (OSCM) PhD Summer School.
Organised by the School's OSCM Group and the Centre for Supply Chain Research (CSCR), the event was led by Dr Daniel Xing and Professor Hugo Lam who invited nine international experts to share the latest advances in research methodologies and cutting-edge topics.
Over the course of five inspiring days, PhD students from academic institutions in nine different countries enjoyed insightful expert talks that covered key areas in the study of OSCM.
These included logistics and transportation modelling, research projects in AI and business, event study methodology application to product recalls and supply chain disruptions, stochastic dynamic programming and parameterised policy optimisation.
“We are deeply grateful to all nine professors who generously shared their time, expertise, and mentorship,” said Daniel.
“A very special thanks to our two external speakers, Professor Tingliang Huang from Haslam College of Business and Professor Manpreet Hora from Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business.
“They travelled all the way from the United States to spend the entire week with us, engaging with every student, offering one-to-one feedback, and contributing immensely to the spirit and success of the school.”
The students also received invaluable advice on the transition from PhD student to independent OSCM researcher, including practical tips on how to design impactful research and develop their careers.
The summer school’s provided students with an opportunity to share ideas, challenge perspectives and build new relationships, by collaborating in small, diverse teams and working closely with their peers and assigned academic mentors.
The event was positively welcomed by students, who described it as “an unforgettable week” and “a fantastic experience to connect with brilliant minds and explore emerging research in OSCM.”
The Summer School concluded with a 3-Minute Research Presentation Competition where students had the chance to present their research ideas in front of top experts in the field and win several awards
