Year Abroad

The Year Abroad is a great opportunity to put into practice everything you’ve learned ahead of your final year. You will develop language skills and the confidence to work with people from different cultures, both fundamental to your future employability and career prospects.

Students who study a degree programme including a language will normally spend their third year of studies abroad (in between second and final year).

The aim of the Year Abroad is to build upon your learning from years 1 and 2 and put into practice everything you have learnt ahead of the final year! You will have the opportunity to significantly develop your language skills, increase your confidence and widen your intercultural competence, as well as improve your employability and career prospects.

The Year Abroad is compulsory for anyone studying a language at 50%, 75% or 100%.

Students studying a language at 25% will automatically be registered for a 4-year programme, including a year abroad. If you study a language at 25% you can choose not to go on the year abroad and transfer to an equivalent 3-year programme; however, you should note that this changes your degree title to ‘PROGRAMME with a Modern Language’, and your language will no longer appear in your degree title.
