Dear potential adult learners and Go Higher alumni,
It’s my pleasure to write about my experiences for the Go Higher blog, having recently completed my undergraduate degree in philosophy with first-class honours at the University of Liverpool.
Hi there
Let me start by introducing myself: my name is Mary Pollard, I am a mature student who embarked on the Go Higher Programme at the University of Liverpool in 2020.
As I am writing to you now, I have just finished my Law degree, and I can't wait to see what the Lord has prepared for me now that I have the tools to help people.
Before I joined Go Higher, I never knew that I had the potential to pursue a degree at university level, let alone a Law degree. Joining was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. The staff in Go Higher were very supportive and took a chance on someone like me who, by the world standards, would have never been able to qualify for academic work at university level.
I am a mature woman with children whose position seemed highly unlikely to fit in the academic criteria of getting back on track and pursue a degree. As soon as I applied, I was met with very helpful and positive members of staff who showed me that I can do it. Their encouraging words and kindness led me to actually start believing that anything was possible.
The whole Go Higher access programme is not only built to give you a foundation academically, but it is also built in such a way that it works on your confidence as a mature student, which in turn builds your stamina in aiming higher, as its name testifies.
I remember after I joined, midway into the studies, I hit a brick wall as I was not used to going through a lot of reading materials for analysis. At that moment, I was thinking... this is it… this is not for me...I can't make it. But the staff encouraged me to press forward and gently directed me into the right direction. They showed me how to work through the study and assessment materials and showed me how to maximise my learning skills through their specialized module content delivery.
To cut the long story short... because of the Go Higher access programme, I was able to get admission into the Department of Law and Social Justice of the University of Liverpool as a mature law student. I could not believe it! It was electric... [an] amazing journey.... thank you, God... thank you Go Higher... may anyone reading this apply, enjoy and finish their studies with a great smile as I have.
