About

Personal Statement

I qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in Liverpool and worked in and around London as a radiographer for 10 years. I then moved into radiographer education and have been teaching and researching in Radiography and associated fields for over 20 years.

I have held most administrative posts within Radiography Education, highlights being as Programme leader of a Masters in Advanced Radiographic Practice and a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography programme. The latter being the first fully integrated problem-based learning radiography degree in the UK.

In 2007 I was promoted to Professor of Medical Imaging Education at the University of Salford but after 5 years I was given the opportunity to move to the University of Liverpool, a Russell Group university which was a lifelong ambition. I had no hesitation in taking up the post and on the 1st January 2013 became the Head of the Directorate of Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy.

Following a recent expansion and re-organisation the Directorate has now divided into two, emerging as separate Radiotherapy and Diagnostic Radiography Programmes. I am Head of Programme for Diagnostic Radiography and will be leading the discipline as we move forward into an exciting period of expansion and development of the undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD provision. A new MSc in Advanced Practice (apprenticeship route) and a new BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography will be rolled out in 2019.

In September 2022 I had completed my two terms of office as professional lead (AKA: head of department). That is the maximum allowable by the university. I have now taken on a role at Faculty level as deputy for quality in Health and Life Sciences and am the Director of Studies (AKA programme leader) for the MSc Diagnostic Radiography (pre-registration) programme.

In October 2023 I was appointed as to the Approval and Accreditation Board of the College of Radiographers. This is a national appoinment and this committee is responsible for accrediting programmes and individuals for the professional body. It sets and maintains the educational and practice standards of diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.
