About

Dr Yu Chen is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Materials Science and Engineering within the Department of Materials, Design and Manufacturing Engineering, at the University of Liverpool. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Exeter in December 2021, an M.Sc. in Advanced Engineering Materials from the University of Manchester in December 2016, and a B.Eng in Functional Materials from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). Before moving to the University of Liverpool, he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Exeter.

His research focuses on the design and additive manufacturing of advanced porous and fibrous ceramic materials for thermal protection, fire resistance, and lifetime extension of components operating in extreme environments. His work addresses challenges in energy systems, maritime and offshore infrastructure, and electronic thermal management, with a strong emphasis on process–structure–property relationships and industrial translation.

Dr Chen combines additive manufacturing, nano-/micro-structural engineering, and high-temperature characterisation to develop lightweight, non-metallic material systems that improve safety, durability, and energy efficiency in net-zero technologies.

Dr Chen’s research is organised around the following interconnected themes:

● Architected porous and fibrous ceramics for thermal insulation and fire protection in extreme environments

● Additive manufacturing of ceramic and ceramic-composite structures

● Lifetime extension and safety of energy and maritime infrastructure, including thermal-barrier and fire-resistant systems

● Industry-linked development of advanced ceramic materials, bridging laboratory research and real-world deployment

Dr Chen welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD and MSc students interested in advanced ceramic materials, additive manufacturing, and materials for extreme environments. Projects may be supported through EPSRC, CDT, CSC, or industry-linked studentships.

Prospective students are encouraged to contact Dr Chen to discuss potential research topics aligned with his current programmes.
