Teaching

Prof Thangaratinam approach to teaching involves alignment of educational activities with research opportunities, strengthening both areas simultaneously. So far, she has
embedded over 50 undergraduates from Medicine, Mathematics, and Humanities degree programmes (Birmingham, Cambridge, Bratislava, Nottingham, Warwick, Oxford) within her research programmes. The students had co-authors papers, including as first authors in Lancet and BMJ Global Health (Sheikh), won national and international awards, successfully organised the global conference GLOW 2022 (MEDALL winner) — seven have secured prestigious academic foundation posts so far.

A significant proportion of her efforts has been towards developing, supporting, and supervising early career researchers, facilitated by establishing the postgraduate trainees, and promoting research activity within the NHS by securing dedicated academic time full time clinicians. She actively involved midwives and midwifery students in research through the midwifery tier of the Dame Hilda Lloyd Network led by Birmingham City University, which trains large number of midwifery students in the UK, and continues to support midwives as supervisor for their PhD and Maters programmes, and securing NIHR Fellowships.
