Professional activities

Leon has been an active and influential member of the dental community, contributing to clinical guideline development, professionalisation of the dental workforce, and academic publishing.

He participated in the British Society of Periodontology’s (BSP) adaptation of European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) guidelines for the UK healthcare system. Using the GRADE ADOLOPMENT framework, these guidelines were developed in line with the 2017 Classification scheme, which supports an individualised approach to treatment. Leon was chosen to represent the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT), Leon contributed to both the S3 BSP working groups, ensuring that the perspectives of dental hygienists and therapists were embedded in national policy.

Leon has also championed the professionalisation of Dental Care Professionals through his involvement with the College of General Dentistry (CGDent). He contributed to the Career Pathways in Dentistry programme, developed through a collaborative and consultative process involving all regulated roles within the dental team. This initiative provides structured career progression and professional recognition across the profession.

Within the BSDHT, Leon has held several leadership roles, including London Regional Representative, elected Council Member, and Executive Council Member. He contributed to the society’s publication committee, supported its two peer-reviewed journals, and was instrumental in founding the Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging group. He was re-elected to Council by the membership, with his most recent term ending in January 2023.

Leon also engages with academic publishing as a previous reader for the British Dental Journal (BDJ) Team, a nationally cited journal serving the whole dental team. His appointment reflected his commitment to supporting evidence-based practice and professional development.

He is a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) and the Faculty of Dental Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, in addition to being a member of the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD).
