Professor Ian Burn PhD

Personal Statement

I am a Professor of Economics and Chair in Applied Microeconomics at the University of Liverpool. I received my Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California-Irvine in 2017. Before joining the University of Liverpool, I was an Assistant Professor at the Swedish Institute for Social Research in Stockholm.


My research focuses primarily on the economics of discrimination. I have focused on discrimination against women, older workers, and the LGBT community. I specialize in labor market discrimination and workplace discrimination, understanding how working lives are impacted by discrimination. A large focus of my work is on quantifying the level of discrimination faced by marginalized workers through the use of experimental methods, machine learning, and advanced econometrics. I also am an expert in the economic impacts of equalities laws, publishing numerous papers in leading journals on how laws shift employer behavior and what makes some laws work and others not.
