Before entering academia, I worked for 17 years in the manmade fibres and knitwear industries. Jobs included product design and export sales' ending up as the Sales and Marketing Manager for the Uniforms Division of a large, Leicester knitwear company. Working in industry drew my attention to the problems that companies have in coordinating their work across different functional departments; "Why don't Sales ever talk to Production?" asked a colleague, and that question has stuck in my research ever since.
Within Academia, I started teaching strategy at Coventry University, before changing my emphasis to organizational change and leadership. For the last 16 years, my teaching work has focused largely on work based learning programmes first at the University of Northampton and then at the United Kingdom's Open University.
