About

Personal Statement

I am a paediatrician and clinical lecturer funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). I split my time equally between research at the University of Liverpool and clinical practice in the NHS.

I am interested in the relationship between maternal and child health in low resource settings, with a focus on infections, inflammation, and immune development, particularly in the context of HIV infection. My current research combines epidemiology and laboratory immunology in this field at the Zvitambo Institute for Maternal and Child Health Research in Harare Zimbabwe, with a particular focus on children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected. I recently completed my PhD at Queen Mary University of London with a thesis on HIV-related immune activation and clinical outcomes of mothers and infants in rural Zimbabwe.

I am also interested in social determinants of health, both globally and within the UK, and am currently leading health promotion work at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. Clinically, I am interested in the investigation and management of children with fever of unknown origin, tropical paediatrics, treating complex infections and infections in the immunocompromised host, diagnosis of inflammatory disorders presenting with fever, and treating infants with congenital infections.
