I am a Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Infectious Diseases with research interests in paediatric HIV and co-infections (such as cytomegalovirus) and in the relationship between maternal and child health in low resource settings, with a focus on infections, inflammation and immune development. My research combines epidemiology, laboratory immunology, clinical trials, human-centred design and implementation science at the Zvitambo Institute for Maternal and Child Health Research in Harare, Zimbabwe, with a particular focus on children with advanced HIV disease (AHD) and those are who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU).
Working alongside community members and local clinicians and social scientists, I am leading fieldwork to co-design and test new ways of (a) implementing interventions for children living with advanced HIV and (b) improving growth and development of children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected, including mixed-methods evaluations. I also undertake immunological laboratory work embedded within large population-based cohorts to improve understanding of immunity in infants and mothers affected by HIV.
I split my time between research at the University of Liverpool and clinical practice in the NHS at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
