Residency programme
We offer a structured residency programme providing a foundation for board certification in specialties such as surgery, internal medicine, anaesthesia and diagnostic imaging.
Residency positions at the Equine Hospital are highly sought after and obtaining one of these training positions is extremely competitive. The Equine Hospital currently employs 6 residents (senior clinical training veterinary scholars), supervised by our team of hospital senior clinicians.
All our residents are qualified veterinary surgeons (MRCVS) who have several years post-qualification experience in equine veterinary clinical practice. Many have completed internships at various academic and private institutions in the UK and abroad and have worked in primary care prior to starting their training.
Role and training programmes
This role involves admission and evaluation of cases, and the treatment and ongoing hospital care of a range of different clinical cases. Residents play a key role in communicating with the owners of horses providing daily updates.
They also play a key role in undergraduate teaching and assessment during clinical rotations. Residents are also required to attend and present at seminars and journal clubs within the hospital as part of their training requirements.
Each of our residents are completing further training towards specialist qualifications including European Diplomas in either Equine Surgery, Equine Internal Medicine, Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging or Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. This involves structured rotation through different clinical services and provision of clinical care during standard working hours and out-of-hours clinical duties.
As well as working on clinics, our residents spend some time ‘off clinics’ completing speciality training rotations at the hospital and other institutions and conducting their research projects. As part of an academic institution, residents have the opportunity to undertake a variety of different research projects across the School of Veterinary Science and the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences.
