Internship programme
We offer a structured internship programme providing a foundation for board certification in specialties such as surgery, internal medicine, anaesthesia and diagnostic imaging.
The Equine Hospital employs 5 rotating veterinary interns who are responsible for assisting in the care of hospital patients and supervision of undergraduate veterinary students during clinical rotations.
These positions are highly sought after and provide our interns with excellent training and development of advanced clinical skills by our team of Specialist and Advanced Practitioner veterinary surgeons within our modern and well-equipped Equine Hospital.
Rotating internship for qualified veterinary surgeons
The interns are all required to be qualified veterinary surgeons (MRCVS) and play a key role in the admission and initial evaluation and treatment of hospital in-patient cases. They also assist in provision of high-level care of our equine in-patients under the supervision of a team of senior clinicians and senior clinical training scholars.
Interns rotate through the disciplines of internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, imaging and have opportunity to develop further skills in equine anaesthesia. Interns undergo training and develop skills in undergraduate teaching and assessment. They will also have the opportunity to attend and present at seminars and journal clubs within the hospital and across the School of Veterinary Science.
Career prospects
The hospital internship programme provides a wonderful opportunity for veterinary surgeons to build their clinical expertise and skills in evidence-based veterinary medicine, teaching and research. Through the hospital team, they are also able to build their network of professional contacts and develop their curriculum vitae further.
We take great pride in seeing how hospital interns have continued to develop their professional skills across a range of areas. Previous interns at the Equine Hospital have gone on to gain equine residency positions and become specialist clinicians in universities and private practices all over the world, have undertaken PhDs, have returned to work in equine practice or have gone onto other academic or veterinary industry roles.
