Vaccinations
Horses are routinely vaccinated against equine influenza (flu) and tetanus. Other vaccinations such as equine herpesvirus (EHV), equine rotavirus, equine viral arteritis (EVA), and strangles are also available.
We can advise if extra vaccinations are appropriate for your horse, pony, or donkey based on their circumstances.
Vaccination course
There is an initial primary course of three vaccinations for influenza (flu) and tetanus:
- The first is when your horse is 6 months or older
- The second vaccine is 4 weeks (manufacturer guidelines) or 21-60 days (Jockey Club/FEI rules) after the first
- The third vaccine is 5 months (manufacturer guidelines) or 120-160 days (Jockey Club rules) after the second.
Following this your horse should have a 6 or 12-month (depending on the relevant equine sport governing body*) booster vaccination – this will alternate between flu and flu and tetanus combined.
