Medical investigations
We provide a comprehensive range of medical investigations for many different conditions that may occur in horses, ponies, and donkeys.
Our team has similar and differing areas of equine clinical interests, including involvement in the latest research in conjunction with other veterinary clinicians and researchers at the university. They also have access to a full range of modern equine practice equipment together with the advanced facilities and expertise provided by the equine hospital, within easy reach of our practice patients.
Individualised plans for owners and cases
Our team provide a full range of options to investigate, treat or manage your horse, pony or donkey based on individual assessment of each case, which is available 24 hours a day in urgent cases. Using available research-based information, our vets are happy to discuss the various options and costs of these with our practice clients.
Commonly performed investigations performed by the practice team include:
- Respiratory conditions (see also poor performance)
- Metabolic/endocrine diseases (e.g. Cushing's disease, Equine metabolic syndrome, and associated laminitis)
- Skin conditions – parasites, skin growths, allergies and other disorders
- Eye conditions
- Neurological conditions
- Musculoskeletal conditions (see also Lameness)
- Gastric ulceration
- Dental disease
- Weight loss
- Recurrent colic
- Diarrhoea
- Heart, liver, and kidney conditions
- Foal diseases.

Hospital facilities and advanced veterinary care
The Equine Hospital also contain information about advanced medical investigations that can also be performed in conjunction with the practice team, enabling us to provide a multidisciplinary team approach to get the best outcome for our patients and their owners. This includes critical care of horses requiring hospital-based intensive care including advanced surgery and medical therapy which is offered round the clock, 365 days a year.
Isolation facilities
Horses with diseases that can be spread to other horses are treated and monitored by a veterinary team within our specifically designed isolation facility.
